Emerald is a member of the beryl species of minerals and has a vivid green hue. The color of most emeralds is caused by trace amounts of chromium in the atomic structure. Colombia has been a major source for emeralds for centuries, but emeralds have also been found in Brazil, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Emerald is the birthstone for the month of May and is traditionally the gemstone used for twentieth and thirty-fifth wedding anniversaries.
