Table cut

The simplest type of step cut which is very flat with a large table. Often used for seals or for men's rings.

Tanzanite

A deep blue-violet variety of zoisite. Tanzanite was discovered in 1962 in the Merelani Hills of Tanzania. This deposit is the only know source for this marvelous gemstone.

Tarnish

A dulled luster or finish.

Tennis style

Continuous, evenly matched stones, as seen with tennis bracelets. There are variations on the style, such as alternating stones.

Tiffany setting

A generally round, six-prong setting with long, slender prongs that flare out from the base.

Tiger’s eye

Tiger's Eye is a variety of quartz that diplays fibrous inclusions. This gemstone is generally brownish yellow, but can be a bluish grey sometimes, in which case it might be called Hawk's Eye.

Titanium

A metallic element that has been used mainly in industry, but also used in some jewelry because of the range of colors it produces when heated.

Toggle clasp

A fastener consisting of a ring on one end of a necklace or bracelet and a short bar on the other end. The bar is slid through the ring and sits across it so it does not slide or pull.

Topaz

Topaz is a gemstone that can come in many colors, the most popular being light blue. Rich yellowish orange topaz is sometimes referred to as Imperial Topaz. Other colors include pink, red and purple.

Total weight

sum of the carat weight of all of the gemstones in a piece of jewelry.

Tourmaline

A crystalline mineral which is used as a gemstone. It typically comes in a variety of colors, the most common of which is black.

Triangle cut

A modified brilliant cut stone.

Trillion cut

A modified brilliant cut triangular stone with 44 facets.

Troy weight

Precious metals (like gold, platinum, and silver) are measured in troy weight, which has units of pennyweights, ounces, and pounds.

Tsavorite

A transparent, emerald green variety of garnet.

Turquoise

Semi-precious stone which is greenish-blue in color.
